The Death of the Filibuster

Many Democrats want to end the filibuster in the United States Senate. The Democrats currently have 50 senators and the President of the Senate, Vice President Kamala Harris, makes a simple majority. The Republican Party is in the minority with 50 people. Many have said that taking away the filibuster would allow a smoother flow in the senate, with passing legislation. However, aside from the principle that the filibuster holds there is a dangerous impact upon all of Americans with the death of the filibuster.

First of all is what is the filibuster. The filibuster is the act of minority debating legislation so that it will die. Normally when filibuster happens it has some connection to the majority not negotiating a piece of legislation to compromise and help all Americans or it is a piece of legislation that would gravely marginalize a group or minority in America. Other times the filibuster is abused for political gains. In this case the majority can enact the Cloture Rule. This is when 60+ senators call a vote and break the filibuster.

Taking away the filibuster would silence the minority and let the majority become a dictator to our nation. We have to give everyone a say, whether conservative, liberal, or independent. It is wrong on either side to silence a minority, even if it is a political party we disagree with.

Right now 50 senators want to silence the other 50 senators and would be able to because of the President of the Senate (VP). Why would you want to silence almost a good portion of America. In some states you are silencing one senator and letting the other one make all of the decisions. That is not a good way to govern or mirror the opinion of the people. If the democrats enforce the death of the filibuster they themselves will see the negative impacts when they become the minority. The filibuster allows for a more than simple majority to want to pass the bill meaning that they mirror most of America. Without the filibuster whichever party is a majority would able to get their radical agenda passed with no compromised or negotiation. In a government like ours we need to have compromise and mirror the common people's views not a radical group on the right or left. This is a sign of corruption or pure idiocy. This is how a majority starts to take to much power and cause oppression of its people. This is not a sign of a good nation and the voters need to realize this and tell their senators to not take away the filibuster.
